| Famous Love Stories {Antony and Cleopatra} Antony and Cleopatra, a well-known historical tragedy by Shakespeare falls under the category of Famous Love Stories. Given here is a synopsis of the novel Antony and Cleopatra. Mark Antony, one of the administrators of Rome, along with Octavius and Aemilius Lepidus, after being becharmed by Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt has neglected his duties or it can be said that he abandoned all his responsibilities to be with Cleopatra. After getting the message that his wife Fulvia is dead and that Pompeii is making arrangements to rebel against Antony, Antony decides to return to Rome. Octavius convinces Antonio to marry his sister, Octavia in order to solidify their relationship with each other. Cleopatra's comes to know about Antony's marriage with Octavius and breaks into a rage but when a messenger reports to Cleopatra that Octavius is unimpressive in looks, she feels confident over the fact that she would be able to win Antony back. Antonio and his other administrators in a meeting with Pompeii settle all their differences on the condition that Pompeii would be allowed to rule Sicilia and Sardania. Antonio departs for Athens with Octavius. Antonio comes to know that Octavius has raged a war against Pompeii and gets furious. Pompeii is dead and Octavius has imprisoned Lepidus. Antonio accuses Octavius of not giving his share of the land that belonged to Pompeii. Antonio decides to fight Octavius on sea and Cleopatra promise to help Antonio with his fleet. Cleopatra flees with her sixty ships in the middle of the battle and Antony follows him abandoning his men. Back in Alexandria, Antony is overcome with grief and feels ashamed for himself. Octavius sends a messenger to ask Cleopatra to be on his side. Eventually Antony forgives Cleopatra and he once gain challenges Caesar for a combat, but this time he decides to fight on land . Enorbus, Antony's lieutant betrays Antony and joins Ocatvius. Antonio sends the goods to Enorbus that belonged to Enorbus. Enorbus commits suicide out of guilt. This battle goes well for Antony until it gets shifted from the land to the sea. The fleet deserts Antony gets sure about the fact that Cleopatra has betrayed him and decides to kill him. Cleopatra locks herself in a monument and sends the message to Antony that she has committed suicide. When Antony comes to know about Cleopatra's death he decides to kill himself and tells Eros to slay him. To avoid this duty, Eros kills himself. Antonio makes an attempt to kill himself but only manages to injure himself and at that moment he comes to know that Cleopatra is alive. Antony is hoisted up to Cleopatra's monument and he dies in her arms. Octavius asks Cleopatra to surrender but she refuses. Cleopatra takes the help of the poison of the asp to kill herself. Cleopatra orders his men to bury her beside Antonio. The death of Antony and Cleopatra helps Octavius to become the first Roman Emperor. Throughout the novel, we find that Antony is torn with the conflict, between his love for Cleopatra and his duties and he proves that he is a true Roman by committing suicide and Cleopatra is one of the most strongest female character that Shakespeare has depicted the story of Romeo and Juliet with your Valentine on Valentines Day.
